Revision as of 12:21, 6 March 2020

Costumes are outfits that Shantae can change into to change her stats and abilities. First introduced in Shantae: Risky's Revenge for the iOS to promote Shantae: Half-Genie Hero's Costume Swap stretch goal. Some characters also have different outfits that doesn't change anything but their appearance.

Shantae's Outfits

The Red  Bedlah Attire

A Turkish costume worn by Shantae. Most commonly, it is used to refer to the matching set of bra and belt that cabaret dancers use.  The Turkish style of belly dance is a more playful and energetic style in which it gives Shantae that iconic personality of feel. It is made of The word bedlah is Arabic for " suit".

Concept Artworks
Shantae (1994 model)

Matt bozon made Shantae for the PC engine Before the Gameboy Color version. The sprite model was Much different than what we see her today. I recall the tiger sprite model and the harpy but I don't have any other records.

The Hair style and eyes at the time were both brown but the Iconic structure is there. Givin the look, this was clearly meant for a console game or a CD-ROM based disk game.

Matt: Erin bell (my future wife) designed Shantae during the SNES era. her idea was a hair-whipping genie that could belly dance to summon up magic. She drew these first few images to explain the concept. Erin named the character after a little girl who attended her day camp. After laying down the broad designs, Erin passed the character-design reins to me. It was such a powerful act of trust that we soon were married. Well, not really, but it does make the story more interesting.

ShantaeDisgust

Shantae's iconic attire for the Gameboy Color made it's debut. She wears a red bedlah and wearing a circlet with a blue stone

Matt: After Escaping the y2k, Erin ( who'd been off working on seasons 1 and 2 of futurma) cam eback to WayForward. By now I'd locked in the style and proportions. Shantae's bracelets bcame wrist guards, she got her ears pierced, and she lost the long trailing sash we often had around her waist. This sketch became the promotional image for shantae [for] Game Boy Color, which was sent off to potential publishers along with the demo"

2004 standard shantae

2004 Standard Shantae

2004 began the transition from migrating into the Gba era where her design layout made a slight adjustment. The term standard is a meaning to showcase this will be the future ideal attire for all upcoming games.

Matt: Comming off Sigma Star Saga, which featured slightly older characters, I could see how Shantae had been incrementally becoming less kidlike. This design is probably what I'd call "the Standard" Shantae, if one ever really existed. She's a young lass here, trapped somewhere between childhood and adulthood. She's got the signature hair, and the sash has been replaced by a sort of trim that does the same job. And for the first time in a while, she wasn't standing quite so tall.

2005 gamecube shantae

[Concept] Gamecube Shantae

By 2005, the Experimental phase was initiated to find a method to have shantae from 2-d into a 3-Dimensional view, but many problems became conflicted that the ideal look was scrapped!

The Cuffs and bra was changed, and the sash entirely being removed!

Matt: On Gamecube, we built her 3-D model from a previous design, but found that at long camera distances she didn't read too well onscreen. AND at third-person view, she was hidden by her hair. The fix was a stumpy triangular design with overstated hips and large feet to ground the character. Seeing the character in 3_D exposed many problems with the [Design[. The harem sleeves never did attach anywhere, and her rockin '80's bangs had Flintstone Face Syndrome, needing to flip at will. We went back to the drawing board, literally."

2006 e shantae

By 2006, Shantae has gone through various changes, where the sash is entirely removed, replaced with a black vest. The iconic sleeves also removed giving a more heroine look.

Matt: I enlisted the help of several artists ( talented friends working shows like Teen Titans, and popular manga and magazines) to explore the character, really encouraging new directions. Although this was mainly an exercise, it brought about some very cool results. Sleeves were gone and grounding black elements were brought in. This is by far the most heroic she's ever looked.

2006 r shantae

near the end of 2006, Shantae reach a pinacle of an ideal look for the next upcoming shantae GBA.

Matt: At the end of the redesign phase leading up to the DS pitches, I stopped at Robert DeJesus's supercute Shantae design. It put all of the key color elements into place that we still use today, and her age nicely contrasted against Risky's. Now we had this budding kid hero battling a world-travelled tyrant woman. For the first time, Shantae and Risky didn't stand as equals, which was refreshing.

2009 finally made her return after many years of development problems. Many also have responded to the previous design from 2006 stating that it has lost it's originality.

Work went underway until they finally corrected it, bringing back the iconic red sleeves.

Matt: When DsiWare was annouced we gave it another push, which resulted in the current design. each of the recent images are a product of several artists collaborating. it's a lot like cell-animation prodution. A different person handles the roughs, tie-downs, clean-up, digital ink, coloring, and then adding graphical touches. Voilà!, Today's version of Shantae".

Pirates curse shantae

2012 After the success from her second release, the development team decided it was time to add a new fresh take on her adventure. Donning the theme of "pirate", Shantae, now ventures with the pirate attires that once wore by her Frenemy, Risky boots.

Matt: The other things about (this game), We are doing some really fun things on the 3ds system, our portarit system, uses characters that are all layered in 3d, so they can pop out a bit more.

HGH shantae portrait

After it's initial Kickstarter campaign, Shantae took a huge drastic shift in not only her change but also her wardrobe as well. The sash was completely removed, her wrist guards increased in size and her hips now showing two yellow outer trims which were inspired by Patricia from (Mighty Switch force)

With the new artwork made, this will prove to be useful to make the character easily detectible on the newly made 3-D rendered textures.

Matt:  Our goal is to introduce Shantae to a whole new audience with a fresh art style and a brand spanking new storyline. As always, we're putting pitch-perfect controls in the front seat.

Matt to RileyAra': (Hip Trim story) I put trim on Patricia, and thought it would be a good look for Curse. But in final images the trim had evolved. For Hero and they were flared out to look dynamic & nonsensical. Volks solved this in 3D by making them loops. In Sirens I put them back to outer trim.

Seven sirens shantae(Draft)

Thanks to Naoko Tsutsumi and matt bozon collaboration, Shantae has now have the look and feel of both worlds, a Western influence on the character designs, with a comic book look and almost cartoon-like feel Anime.

Dancer costume redesign

The new design for the Dancer costume.

In the Director's Cut edition of the game, the Dancer costume features its own stand-alone mode called Magic Mode, which sees Shantae wear the outfit for the entirety of the game. Rottytops, Risky Boots, and Sky also wear the outfit after ending up in the same situation. After the Tan Line Island arc ends, Shantae and the other girls regain their normal outfits, as they're not required. Shantae briefly wears it, however, during a conversation with Sky in Scuttle Town where the latter asks her to promise that they'll never speak of it again.
